An example below illustrates a successful application;

Project Title: Treasures of Panvel

Winner Name: Sonam Ambe

Pillar name: The Pillar of Socio-cultural Realm

Year of the Grant: 2017

Project Details:

The proposal recommends that development in New India should include the existing heritage and culture of  the region and not treat the new nodes of urbanization like  greenfields devoid of a past.

The primary component of Heritage inclusive Urbanisation  is Awareness. The general population should be aware of  the Architectural treasures of their locality. Interviews of  100 participants at Panvel Railway Station brought to the  forefront a glaring reality that in today’s fast paced lifestyles people have literally left the past behind.

This proposal makes a case for Panvel City, near Mumbai.  The development of the new airport of Panvel has led to a  massive urbanization drive including the setting up of  NAINA Authority, (Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area). After studying archives of Panvel’s heritage,  documented in 2004, it was depressing to note that many of  the Maratha wadas, mosques and temples have given way  to concrete jungle losing its original character.

The real impetus came from the fact that the proposed Panvel airport site holds fifth century caves that were used as  stop-over accommodation by merchants traveling between  Chaul and Sopara. However, these caves are neither  acknowledged nor considered in the airport proposal.

This proposal does not wish to take a high stand against  development. Development is crucial to stay updated with  today’s needs and aspirations. This proposal simply makes  a case for documentation of our past. This documentation  will spread awareness and this awareness will help the  common people, politicians, and professionals take informed decisions about development.
